One of the unfortunate issues of the twenty first century is Teen Weight Loss. With the ongoing problem of single parent homes, where one or both parents has to leave the home to go to work, many children are not getting proper nutrition. As a result Teen Weight Loss has risen to become one of the main health problems in North America.

As fast food replaces the Healthy Diet that a parent or caregiver would prepare, the amounts of fats our children are ingesting are causing a multitude of problems. Among these, is the risk of type 2 diabetes, and is the underlying problems of depression and food related disorders. Teen dieting is a main concern in school health curriculums, with the focus on exercise and proper nutrition in and away from school.

The school cafeterias have set new standards from the menus they served years ago. With changes being made from the usual heavily starchy foods and saturated fats to more fresh fruit and vegetables at lunchtimes, teen dieting will begin to get under control and move into safer levels. It is not unusual to see teenagers having items like pizza and French fries at lunchtime. Over time these boys and girls will be consuming more calories resulting in serious weight gains, thus running the risk of becoming obese adults with more serious health problems.

Teen Weight Loss and Eating Disorders

Another problem we are having with Teen Weight Loss is anorexia and bulimia, today dieting is becoming more evident and drastic as many teens are becoming more aware of their appearance in a negative way. Through the media and television the set standards for a teen’s appearance are not realistic. Young people tend to believe this is the way you should look and they begin to manipulate their bodies in all kinds of ways to achieve these goals. Some of the ways they are doing this is through starvation, binging, purging and even drugs and alcohol. The way these teens see themselves is not the way others see them. A thin girl or boy may look in the mirror and see an overweight person and this will cause them to become depressed, thus the onset of food related problems.

How do Teens Deal with Problems

The ways a teen will deal with a problem will also affect their eating habits to the point of being an unhealthy person in need of medical attention. For some this may become a point of no return and the end results may be fatal. Failed relationships have also caused children to have food related disorders. A relationship with a parent or a romantic interest that isn’t a healthy one is a primary cause for food related issues. Some children believe that in the instances of a romantic interest their appearance, whether they be five pounds overweight makes a difference in that they are liked by the other person or not. They begin to obsess over these five pounds creating unhealthy situations.

Teen Weight Loss and Parents

For a parent the best solution to this very common problem is a healthy meal plan and regular exercise for your younger children well as the teenagers. Starting the youngsters off on the right track when they are very young will help to prevent serious issues with Teen Weight Loss at a later time.

The best ways prevent Teen Weight Loss is to limit the intake of fast food and incorporate as much fresh fruits and vegetables as you can get them to eat. Cooking at home following the guidelines for the basic food groups and talking to them about any concerns they may have at the time may not get rid of the problems but this will set a new standard.
