During the sixties Dr. Robert C. Atkins wrote his dynamic “Atkins Diet” book, during that era the low carb restriction was more intense than his newer revised edition. As it is easier to live with and allows the individual more grams of carbohydrate per day, the “Atkins Diet” has become one of the most successful diet plans of our time. The way it works is a very simple and easy to follow regimen.

Combined with exercise it is not unusual for a person to lose anywhere between 20-40 pounds with the induction part of the diet. This induction part is a two week period and is a prelude to two more parts of the diet that will eventually settle into a lifelong lifestyle change. It is not wise to stay on this first part of the “Atkins Diet” for extended periods of time because of the dramatic carbohydrate restrictions which may cause the body to have adverse effects.

What to eat on Atkins Diet

While on the “Atkins Diet” you are allowed to eat as much fat and protein as you like providing you restrict your carbohydrate intake to approximately 22 grams per day. It is always best to eat the foods you like and remember that the fat intake must come from the consumption of animal fats such as real butter instead of margarine and hard cheeses instead of processed cheeses as they do not contain carbohydrates. Sour cream is allowed and nice savory dressings can be made from it, however the salad intake will be restricted as well, as even one small tomato has approximately 5 grams of carbs. As the do add up rather quickly one might be very careful in choosing them. There is a bright side of all the discipline in knowing that such a drastic diet only last two weeks and then on to phase two, which is a little more lenient and allows for more of a variety in food choices.

Exercise is important

The Diet Exercise part of the “Atkins Diet” will help the excess weight disappear almost effortlessly. Remember the more disciplined you are on this program the more positive results will be gained. Most people find that walking is a wonderful way to melt the pounds away, swinging your arms while taking that brisk walk will only add to the calories burned. While some people may not be able to start walking right away, there is always something for everyone.

Swimming is a wonderful way to burn away those unwanted pounds and is less stressful on the joints and muscles. The local gyms are usually equipped with stairs in place of ladders for those not able to pull themselves up in that manner. Before you know it you will be living a much healthier lifestyle and the old symptoms of diabetes, hypertension or the nagging aches and pains of arthritis will be a thing of the past. Although all your symptoms may not totally disappear they will surely start to diminish, leaving you with more vigor and energy than you ever thought possible.

The “Atkins Diet” can be found almost anywhere books and magazines are well stocked. Places such as your local department stores may carry it. Walmart stores, Borders Books and Chapters in Canada and US all have a healthy stock pile. You may also find a great selection of distributors on line at places such as Amazon, or Ebay.
