Because of evidence that the Mediterranean Diet helps reduce the risks of serious heart diseases and stroke many people want to incorporate this type of diet into their lifestyle. The fact is that studies have proven that this diet is rich in monounsaturated fats, which lowers the risk of chronic illness.

Mediterranean Diet and Fats

As the primary source of fat, olive oil which is oil very high in monounsaturated fats and primarily used in the Mediterranean, is catching on all over the world as the wonder diet. Although extra virgin olive oil is the best oil for cooking we can’t forget that it is also very high in calories as well.

Nuts and seeds are loaded with the fats that are good for you, and if you are going to be on the Mediterranean Diet you will have to include plenty of raw ones instead of the roasted nuts that are loaded with salt and can cause illness or complications if eaten on a regular basis. About a handful a day is more than enough.

Eggs are not one of the main items people eat in the Mediterranean, as the people there prefer to get their calcium from plant sources such as beans, leafy green vegetables, figs, and tofu.

Vegetables, Exercise and Mediterranean Diet

This diet is mostly a Vegetarian Diet and although the meat is in abundance it is consumed in moderate amounts. Beans which are high in fiber help to balance things out by reducing cholesterol levels. Beans are easy to store in dry form and are very economical. Almost the perfect food as they are also very high in protein, the basis for strong bones and teeth and important to other bodily functions.

Last but not least a glass of wine a day helps to reduce the risks of chronic illnesses, combined with the rest of the Mediterranean Diet and some exercise is the key to a healthier new you. Wine is not consumed as a recreational drink and is used only at mealtime. There are a lot people in the Mediterranean who like to ride bicycles to and from work and also to run errands, instead of using a car or other motorized means of transportation. Taking in the countryside and saving the environment is also playing a part in that part of the globe.

Importance Of Mediterranean Diet

Scientific research has indicated that men in the Mediterranean’s have lower rates of prostate cancer than their American counterparts. There are also lower rates of heart disease and stroke as well, the claim is that the red of the grapes has an enzyme beneficial to reducing these types of illnesses.

Lifestyle changes to replicate those of the Mediterranean would help us to live happier healthier lives. Our children would benefit from that kind of change, as some would be going back to their cultural roots, as many children have their beginnings in that area of the world. All around the world people are getting into shape and living life the fullest by growing their own food, raising livestock, we are getting out and feeling better about ourselves and teaching others how to do the same.

With much luck and determination it will be the right kind of epidemic, saying goodbye to all of the disease and chronic illness and by using the Mediterranean Diet we are definitely on the right track.
